SUV Rental in Dubai
The SUV list runs from the Audi Q2, a small five-door that slots into any car park, to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Between them sit three Lamborghini Urus, six Mercedes G-Class cars (two of them Brabus builds), four Range Rovers, three Nissan Patrols and a Maybach GLS 600. If you are choosing, the useful first question is how many people and bags are coming, not which badge.
A third row of seats is fitted to the GMC Yukon Denali and AT4, the three Cadillac Escalades, the Patrols, both Land Rover Defender 110s, the BMW X7 and the Lexus LX 570. The boot behind that third row is small in most of them, so for seven people with suitcases the Escalade Platinum Sport, which is the long ESV body, is the one to ask about.
These are road cars as far as the rental goes. Our insurance stops where the tarmac does, for the Defender and the Wrangler as much as for the Urus, so treat four-wheel drive as grip on a wet motorway rather than a ticket into the sand. If you want the dunes, go with a licensed safari company in its own vehicles and leave the rental at the hotel.
Why Rent a SUV in Dubai
A third row when you need it
The Yukon, Escalade, Patrol, Defender 110, X7 and LX 570 all seat seven, so a family with grandparents still fits in one car.
Small enough for tower car parks
The Audi Q2, Mercedes GLA and BMW X2 are short and narrow, which helps on the spiral ramps under Marina and JLT apartment blocks.
Rear air conditioning
The big SUVs have climate controls for the back seats, which earns its keep from June to September when the cabin has been standing in the sun.
Proper four-wheel drive
The Patrol, Defender, G-Class and Wrangler have it, and it is welcome on a motorway in a winter rainstorm. It does not change the rule that rentals stay on paved roads.
Driving a SUV in Dubai
Most driving here is motorway, with Sheikh Zayed, Al Khail and Emirates roads joining the districts, and a big SUV is relaxed at those speeds with the cruise control set. Size matters in the residential towers of Dubai Marina and JLT, where basement ramps are tight and bays narrow. A Range Rover Sport or BMW X5 is easier to place there than a Yukon or an Escalade, both of which are over five metres long.
Who Rents SUVs in Dubai
A seven-seater makes sense if you land at DXB as a family with a week of luggage: one car instead of two taxis, and a third row for the children. A five-seat SUV such as the Porsche Macan or the BMW X4 suits a couple who want a higher seat and a bigger boot than a saloon gives.
The G-Class, the Urus and the Cullinan are a different decision. You book them for the car itself, and at their rates the age limit is 25.
Rental Requirements
Drivers aged 21 can take any SUV under AED 1,000 a day. From AED 1,000 the limit is 25, which takes in the G-Class, Urus, Cullinan, Maybach GLS, BMW X7, Lexus LX 570, Range Rover Vogue and the newer Escalades. Bring your licence with a passport or Emirates ID. Nothing is taken as a deposit.
