Of the seven-seaters we rent, the X7 is the one that drives most like a normal car. It is big, but the steering is precise, the air suspension keeps the body flat through roundabouts, and the 3.0-litre straight-six is quieter than the V8s in the American SUVs.

The cabin is more restrained than an Escalade's, with soft leather, a panoramic glass roof that runs back over the second row and four climate zones. The third row suits teenagers and adults on short trips; for seven adults on a long run to Ras Al Khaimah, the long-wheelbase Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport has more room at the back.
